Process

This project tied together 3 minigames reskinned in construct 3 an overarching 3 ending story with a happy ending, a neutral ending, and a bad ending. This was my first time writing a story, and I tried to incorporate the hero's journey that was taught to us in narrative class. This project was not a linear process. I had actually reskinned my first game in construct (the bad ending) before I decided that I wanted to write a story to tie the experience together

The Bad Ending

For this assignment we were expected to reskin the game "Pop Lab." in Construct3, a template for a bubble shooter. I was watching classics like Mean Girls and Jawbreakers at the time, so I was inspired to create the character Vylette, after the main character in Jawbreaker. I pulled together a moodboard that reflected a Y2K aesthetic and started making assets to put into Construct3.

As you probably have noticed, Vylette later became Violet, as the story progressed, but while reskinning this game, I had drawn in mind an airheaded mean girl who was abadoned by all her friends in an apolcalypse.

I created bright color designs for the different characters, each with a different personality and a different color scheme.

During the reskinning phase, I made a couple mockups for the game. I was told that the saturated backgrounds were too bright, making the icons difficult to see. Looking back, I could have added a darker tint to the background and added a darker layer on top, to make my game elements stand out.

We also designed logos for our game. I wanted my game aesthetic to have a gory, cutesy feel.

The Neutral Ending

My next reskin was the neutral ending. I had an idea for the game's overarching storyline at this point, and wanted to make a reskin where the player can roam around the environment. For this, I used the Tank Pilot template in Construct 3.

As you can see, my early iteration of this reskin was not the best quality. After some feedback, I re-created the environment with a lot more details. I was told that my background was too detailed, so I ended up pushing it back and adding a filter over it to give a better sense of depth and parallax.

The Good Ending

This ending was a reskin of the Foggy Outbreak template. In this template, the player actually isn't allowed to shoot the zombies, which made it the perfect template for my narrative, which became more fleshed out. In this ending, the player is able to coexist with the zombies in a redemptive arc for Violet. In this reskin, I was actually focusing on the animations, and I ended up making 2 animations-- a run cycle and an idle cycle.

I had some difficulty animating digitigrade legs and animating a detailed animation, but thankfully I was able to complete this challenge.

After animating I began reskinning the final game. I added new building assets, floor assets, and changed the fog and lighting to reflect a more apocalyptic world.

Plot

After reskinning these games, my goal was to tie these games together in a choose your own adventure game created in Twine. While my original goal was to make a story about a mean girl, I felt compelled to write a story about an ide that I have had since childhood. I used to always feel like the world would move too fast, and wished for more time, so I daydreamed about a reality and apocalypse where time stood still. I wanted to write a story about a character that dreamed about this, only to find out that they actually missed the progression of life and how the difficulties actually grew her as a person. After writing a mock-up in this google document, I put everything into Twine, and made a multiple ending game for it which linked to each of the endings I had reskinned.
