Through in-depth research of a niche group called EDC, we uncovered the essence of a community driven by a desire for connection and most of all— a love for collecting the right tools.
...
By conducting interviews, gathering field notes and archived data in teams of two, we composed a tailored design pitch for EDCers to share, discover, connect, and expand their EDC network.

Process
This project was part of a semester long course where groups decided on a specific group (ie hobbyists, collectors, or enthusiasts of a particular topic) to collect data to inform an the design for a tailored experience during the second half of the semester. My teammate and I decided on the Everyday Carry community; a group of knife collectors and gear collectors who were driven by the desire to come up with the perfect daily carry.

Our intensive research consisted of 3 parts:
Archived data, where we dug through platforms such as Youtube, Reddit, Instagram, blogs, website, and more for information providing insight into the types of people that the community consisted of,

Elicited data, where we conducted both in person and zoom interviews preparing probing interview questions to understand our audiences' backgrounds and interests to discover commonality.

And Field Notes, where we established a social media presence on Youtube, Instagram, and Discord to better integrate ourselves into the community and improve our understanding of the group. Our detailed notes on this topic could be found in the directory button linked above.
Our research culminated into 3 deliverables: a chart analyzing audience wants/needs in a chart form designed and drawn by me, a presentation side deck and pitch presentation, and a comprehensive write-up that detailed the behaviors and desires of our audience, which was put together by Phoebe Lin.

In the second half of the semester, our team began designing the experience tailored to our audience. During this part of the process, my responsibilities included making floorplans, designing logos and other features, creating moodboards, storyboards, identifying technologies to use in our experience, designing user flow, and creating charts and value maps. Our experience user flow was redesigned from scratch 3 different times after feedback from professors and students, to reflect a comprehensive event where EDCers can share their expertise, swap tools, and enjoy a variety of activities that they would be interested in. The main feature of the experience would incorporate emerging technologies of tool scanning, where users can scan tools into a virtual database, enter a photoshoot with their tools, to be entered into a raffle at the end of the event. The entries from the audience would be displayed on specialized app at the end of the experience, designed by Phoebe Lin.
